The Canada Summer Jobs Program (CSJ) provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers (including most UBC faculties and departments) and private small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for full-time students. It provides young people aged 15 to 30 the opportunity to gain meaningful work and life experience while supporting community-based initiatives.
For 2024, CSJ is returning to its regular parameters and will offer quality jobs over the summer months. The jobs will need to end by August 31, 2024. Jobs will need to be full time with a minimum of 30 hours a week and a duration of at least 6 weeks.
The application deadline is January 10, 2024, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Canada Summer Jobs is designed to focus on local priorities, while helping both students and their communities. CSJ has three objectives:

The wage subsidy is calculated based on a percentage of BC’s minimum hourly wage (up to 50% for public and private sector employers and up to 100% for not-for-profit employers). The minimum wage in BC is currently $16.75 per hour.

Below are the dates to note for 2024 CSJ applications:
Important: Activities cannot begin before your project is approved and an agreement has been signed by both the recipient and Service Canada. The receipt of a completed application does not in itself constitute a commitment on the part of Service Canada. Do not assume any commitment on the part of Service Canada until funding has been approved and a formal agreement has been signed by a Service Canada representative.
All eligibility and funding decisions will be confirmed in writing. You can also check the status of your application through GCOS if you applied via GCOS.
You can submit your application(s) in several ways:
It is recommended that you submit your application electronically using the online fillable application or GCOS; as the ability to submit an application in person or by mail could be impacted by office closures related to COVID-19. Applications received by fax or by email will not be considered. The online fillable application allows you to complete an application online without having to create an account. This is the easiest and fastest way to submit a one-time application. While creating a GCOS account is a one-time process, it allows you to apply and track your application status, sign agreements, manage active projects and submit supporting documents. In addition, GCOS can save business’ information and past CSJ applications, making it much faster to submit all future CSJ applications.

You will need the following UBC-specific information to complete the form:
Determine whether your proposed position is union or non-union. If the proposed scope of duties fall within the CUPE 116 or CUPE 2950 bargaining units or if you are unsure, please consult with your Human Resources Advisor.
Submit your application to Service Canada directly before the deadline.
GCOS (Grants and Contributions Online Services) account:
Grants and Contributions Online Services (GCOS) is an online application for stakeholders to apply for funding opportunities (grants and contributions) and manage Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Service Canada approved active projects within a secure environment.
It is recommended for each UBC department to create a GCOS account for their department.
If you are new to GCOS, you will need to choose one of the "secure sign-in methods" (listed here) to set-up your username and password for GCOS.

Student recruitmentIf you don’t have a student in mind for your position, advertise the position (free-of-charge for UBC employers) on CareersOnline (the online job board for UBC students). Make sure your posting indicates in the job title that it is a Canada Summer Jobs position and includes student eligibility criteria in the qualifications section.
Once you’ve selected a candidate, appoint the student by submitting a Hire BP in Workday to UBC Payroll. The job profile to select is "Student Salaried - Canada Summer Jobs Program" for full time positions.
It's important to have students appointed in their positions prior to starting work. Please refer to Important Information about Payroll for guidelines for entering employee lifecycle transactions.

Students in summer work placementsYou will be responsible for paying the student’s full wages while they are employed in your department/unit. Please refer to UBC Payroll’s 2023 Pay Schedule and the Job Aid with step-by-step instructions for hourly staff to enter time in Workday. Keep accurate and detailed copies of student timesheets as you will need to provide them to Service Canada when you submit your reimbursement claim form at the end of the work placement.

Wage subsidy reimbursementSubmit your claim form directly to Service Canada. You will need to attach to your claim form supporting documentation that indicates the number of hours your student has worked each week. Service Canada will then issue you a reimbursement cheque for your wage subsidy. If you or your student do not meet all eligibility criteria or position conditions as outlined on the Canada Summer Jobs website, Service Canada will not issue a reimbursement.
